PAROLE PREPARATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Parole Preparation Assistance Program is comprised of four components: Parole
workshops in the community for family members, parole workshops in the prisons for
individuals scheduled to appear before the parole board, preparation of parole packets and
Representation for Administrative and Article 78 appeals.
Parole preparation should begin on the day that an individual is sentenced to prison. Yet
most people wait until a few months before their scheduled parole hearing to begin preparation
even though a well-prepared individual increases his/her chance of being paroled. CPR conducts
workshops in the community to help families of people in prison assist them to prepare for
parole. We also conduct the workshops in prisons for the individual persons scheduled to appear
before the parole board.
At the workshop, individuals learn how to prepare a packet to be sent to the parole board
highlighting the educational background and accomplishments of the individual in prison, the
importance of obtaining letters from family, friends and persons in the community supporting
the release of the person and what should and should not be included in these letters. There will
s also information on what documents to obtain and review before consideration by the parole
panel, how to prepare individuals to answer questions posed by the parole panel members if the
individual has to make a personal appearance, and most importantly how to convince the panel
that the individual is ready for release and that his or her release is not incompatible with the
welfare of society. The workshop also includes information on deportation and appeals from
parole denials.
CPR also offers a Parole Preparation Manual for sale. This manual contains much of
the same information disseminated at the workshops. Included in the manual are sample letters
of support, frequently asked questions by the parole board and a list of things you should and
should not say at the hearing.
